Shoulder
The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint. The ball portion is comprised of the humeral head and the socket is comprised of the glenoid (a portion of the scapula/shoulder blade). Many shoulder injuries can be managed non-operatively but severe fractures and dislocations may require surgery.
When the humerus or glenoid fails to heal (a nonunion), surgical intervention is almost always required to restore shoulder function.
