Ankle
Three bones form the ankle joint:
- the bottom portion of the fibula known as the lateral malleolus
- the top portion of the talus bone.
Many fractures involving the ankle require operative treatment.
When the bones around the ankle fail to heal (a nonunion) or heal in a deformed position, surgical intervention is almost always required to restore lower extremity function.
