Hip
The hip is a ball-and-socket joint. The ball portion is comprised of the femoral head and the socket is comprised of the acetabulum (a portion of the pelvic bone). The vast majority of hip fractures require operative treatment.
When the bones of the hip joint fail to heal (a nonunion), surgical intervention is almost always required to restore lower extremity function.
