Deformities
About Deformities
Post-traumatic and developmental deformities result in crooked and foreshortened extremities. In the upper extremity, such deformities can result in decreased functional capacity and significant pain. In the lower extremity, deformities lead to several problems including: unremitting pain, gait disturbances (limping) and abnormal loading of the hip, knee and ankle joint (which ultimately leads to painful arthritis).
Deformity Treatment Options
Not all deformities require surgical correction. Because of the complex nature of this area of orthopedics, choosing a surgeon who has substantial experience evaluating and treating deformities is crucial.
Several methods are available to treat those skeletal deformities that require surgical correction. These methods include the use of either internal skeletal stabilization or Ilizarov external fixation to reshape and lengthen deformed portions of the skeleton.
