Bone Infection: Foot

Presenting

This heel fracture was stabilized at the time of injury at an outside facility by other physicians using pins. Three months after injury the patient was referred in to see Dr. Brinker with an open, draining wound and exposed bone, indicating a deep infection of the heel bone.

Treatment in Progress

This intraoperative x-ray image shows the extent of infected bone that had to be removed from the foot.

Treatment in Progress

These x-rays taken during Ilizarov treatment show the lengthening of the heel bone to restore stability to the foot.

Result After Treatment by Dr. Brinker

These clinical photographs and x-ray taken one year after completing treatment show the restoration of the heel bone, which allowed for definitive stabilization of the hindfoot. The patient is free of pain, can bear full weight, wear normal shoes, and can walk without assitance.
